Advanced Technology IOLs

What are IOLs?

During cataract surgery, your ophthalmologist will remove the natural lens of your eye that has become clouded with cataracts and replace it with an intraocular lens, or IOL. IOLs cannot develop cataracts, meaning that once you’ve replaced your natural lens, you’ll never have to worry about cataracts again.

IOLs come in various types, each suited for different purposes and candidates. Some of the most common types of lenses are monofocal, multifocal, trifocal, extended depth of focus, and toric lenses.

Which IOL is Right for Me?

Before your cataract surgery, you will choose the IOL that will replace your natural lens. Your eye doctor at Nova Eye Experts can discuss the options available at our practice and help you determine the best IOL for your budget, vision needs, and goals.

During your pre-operative consultation, they’ll also review your medical history and conduct a comprehensive eye exam to find the advanced technology lens that will best suit your needs.

IOLs Offered at Nova Eye Experts

Depending on your individual prescription, medical history, lifestyle, and visual goals, your eye doctor will recommend one of these IOLs to replace your natural lens during cataract surgery:

Basic Monofocal IOLs

Monofocal IOLs are the standard lenses used to restore clear vision during cataract surgery. They are typically covered by insurance and Medicare, making them an ideal choice for patients on a tighter budget.

However, monofocal IOLs only correct your vision at one distance, meaning you will likely still need glasses or contacts to enjoy a full range of vision after cataract surgery.

Toric Monofocal IOLs

Toric IOLs are specifically made for patients with astigmatism. Astigmatism is a common refractive error in which the cornea is shaped more like a football than the standard circular shape, distorting vision at multiple distances.

Toric IOLs are designed to work seamlessly with this shape, providing patients with clearer vision. Many multifocal and extended-depth-of-focus lenses also come in toric versions for patients seeking greater independence from visual aids.

As a premium lens, toric IOLs typically have an out-of-pocket cost.

Multifocal/Trifocal IOLs

Multifocal IOLs are advanced technology IOLs that provide clear vision at multiple distinct distances. They are made up of concentric rings of varying powers that your brain can shift between depending on the task at hand.

Nova Eye Experts is happy to offer the PanOptix Pro IOL, a trifocal lens that delivers crisp, clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances. It also provides blue light filtering to prevent digital eye strain while using electronic devices and protects from damaging UV rays that can contribute to eye conditions.

Some patients report visual aberrations like halos and glare when shifting between powers with traditional multifocal lenses, but the PanOptix Pro minimizes this concern. Utilizing proprietary ENLIGHTEN NXT Optical Technology, the PanOptix Pro builds on the original PanOptix IOL, now offering 50% less light scatter with uninterrupted light distribution across all distances.

Ideal candidates for the PanOptix Pro are patients with active lifestyles who want to enjoy independence from glasses and contacts and don’t mind occasional visual disturbances like starbursts or paying an out-of-pocket cost for greater visual freedom.

Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOLs

Extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOLs are designed to provide visual clarity across a broad range of distances while significantly reducing disturbances, such as halos and glare. They tend to be a good choice for patients with active lifestyles or those who may not be suitable candidates for multifocal IOLs due to eye conditions such as macular degeneration or corneal disease.

Nova Eye Experts offers the Vivity EDOF IOL, an advanced technology IOL that uses proprietary non-diffractive X-Wave technology to provide smoother transitions between distances. This design stretches light rather than splitting it, resulting in fewer visual interruptions while maintaining optimal clarity.

While it requires an out-of-pocket cost, many patients find the benefits of the Vivity lens well worth the price. Similar to the PanOptix Pro lens, the Vivity IOL offers blue light and UV filtering to protect your eyes from digital eye strain and sun damage.

This lens offers the most clarity at intermediate distances, making it great for those who work on a computer or enjoy hobbies like gardening and painting. It also provides clear vision at a distance for those who want to participate in sports like golf, tennis, or pickleball without the need for visual aids.

One drawback is that it only offers functional vision up close, meaning you may need reading glasses for certain activities, such as reading small print or intricate needlework. If you want to enjoy smoother, more natural vision with reduced visual disturbances and don’t mind needing reading glasses for certain detailed tasks, the Vivity EDOF IOL could be right for you.
